Green Landscape Group

“Look at a tree, a flower, a plant. Let your awareness rest upon it.
How still they are, how deeply rooted in Being. Allow nature to teach you stillness.”

                              —Eckhart Tolle

Goals

The goals of the Green Landscape Group (GLG) are to educate about and advocate for sustainable (green) landscape practices and conservation of water resources in Rossmoor. Additionally, we hope to increase the awareness and appreciation of the trees and landscapes around us.

We promote landscape with climate appropriate, summer-dry plants, and especially California native plants, when possible.
We also advocate for the healthy growth of plants through proper placement, spacing, and pruning.

Additionally, we advocate for green landscape maintenance practices that include recycling plant debris on site to reduce landfill waste and energy usage and minimizing the use of harmful chemicals.

Landscape irrigation is the predominant user of Rossmoor’s potable water and therefore a major focus of our group.

Good water conservation practices and implementation of the above procedures are cost-saving measures that can save us all money, through the use of less water and lessening costly maintenance practices.

“Good stewardship of our land and landscape coupled with a genuine desire to understand sustainable practices
can, in the end, move the needle, if not mountains.
                                 –Richard McPherson

To achieve the above goals, the GLG pursues the following strategies:

  • Educate residents and landscape reps through careful research, public programs, field trips, factsheets, and articles in the Rossmoor News.
  • Offer classes and tours to explaining and demonstrate green practices for selection, placement and planting of trees and shrubs.
  • Engage with Rossmoor’s Landscape Department on best practices for landscaping and maintenance.

This group has no regularly scheduled meetings.

We educate in the following ways.

  • Information sheets and Rossmoor News articles and columns
  • Video presentations
  • Classes and landscape tours
  • In-person or Zoom meetings to discuss topics of GLG interest.

To join the email list to receive more information and one of our infrequent emails about any of the above, please email

About Richard McPherson

Richard McPherson is a landscape architect and the coordinator of the Green Landscape Group. He is a graduate of UC Berkeley who has been in private practice since 1998. He has specialized in residential and commercial landscape design, has taught for UC Extension, and has offered lectures and tours for various Bay Area clubs and organizations. Richard moved to Rossmoor in 2016 and lives on Pine Knoll Drive.

Richard’s passion is sharing information he has collected over the decades about sustainable landscapes and how to appreciate them. Being sensitive to the environment and the selection and placement of plants that minimize water and pruning, his own frugalness always guides him toward ways of saving money when incorporating these practices.
